Hase Tora Spinning, a long-established spinning company founded in 1887, and Duskin, founded in 1963. Sixty years ago, the two companies joined forces to solve a challenge posed by Duskin\u2019s founder\u2014to \u201cmake cleaning easier\u201d\u2014and created an innovation that changed the world of housework. How was this collaboration\u2014said to have begun with a chance encounter\u2014actually made possible? And how will the \u201cnext innovation\u201d in the textile industry come about? Mr. Ky\u014dji Hase of Hase-Tora Spinning, Mr. Masahiro Imanishi of Duskin, and Mr. Tsutomu Ono of Full Area\u2014a startup spun off from Okayama University\u2014discuss the theme of \u201cKnowledge-Based Manufacturing\u201d (This article is a summary of the session \u201cA New Era of Knowledge-Based Manufacturing\u201d held at the Interdisciplinary Conference Osaka 2023).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Hase Tora Spinning Co., Ltd. \u2014 Mr. Koji Hase<\/strong>\u3000I suspect most people probably don't know what this is. It's a concept unique to Ribane, and it's also the title of Mr. Maru's new book.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

You may be hearing the term \u201cknowledge manufacturing\u201d for the first time, but I\u2019m sure everyone understands what \u201cmanufacturing\u201d means. There isn\u2019t a single person here right now who isn\u2019t wearing clothes, and clothes are \u201cmanufactured goods.\u201d The chairs we\u2019re sitting on right now and this venue itself are no different\u2014they\u2019re all \u201cmanufactured\u201d items. If you look at it from a slightly different perspective, even a long-established tofu shop that\u2019s been in business for 100 years is a manufacturing business that produces tofu. In other words, everything around us\u2014everything that reaches our hands\u2014is thanks to the manufacturing industry. Furthermore, while 99.7% of Japanese companies are small and medium-sized enterprises, many of them are in the manufacturing sector. That\u2019s why Japan is known as a nation of manufacturing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Right now, Japan\u2019s manufacturing industry is on the brink of crisis. If things continue as they are, Japan as a whole will decline along with the decline of its manufacturing sector. So, what should we do? In the coming era, we must invest knowledge in manufacturing to create new concepts. The book *The New Era of Knowledge-Based Manufacturing*, which Mr. Hase mentioned earlier, brings together that message and its specific details in a single volume.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

As someone who is directly involved in a small-to-medium-sized manufacturing business, I was truly stunned when I heard Mr. Maru use the term \u201cknowledge-based manufacturing.\u201d To be honest, at first I thought \u201cmanufacturing\u201d and \u201cknowledge\u201d were complete opposites. However, when I reexamined our company\u2019s business from the perspective of \u201cknowledge-based manufacturing,\u201d I was able to identify strengths we hadn\u2019t recognized before. And that enabled us to redefine the value of our business. I\u2019d like to talk about that today.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

I\u2019ll go into more detail later, but what Duskin\u2014where Mr. Imanishi, a speaker in this session, works\u2014and Hase Tora Spinning did 60 years ago is, in my opinion, a prime example of knowledge manufacturing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Masahiro Imanishi of Duskin<\/strong>\u3000That\u2019s certainly true. Ever since our company was founded 60 years ago, we\u2019ve been greatly indebted to Hase Tora Spinning.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

First, as a general rule, the knowledge-based manufacturing industry does not begin with technology. It is not driven by technology alone. Rather, it starts with a specific challenge, and we then develop an approach to address that challenge. Without a challenge, a new manufacturing industry cannot begin.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

And this issue, too, must be a \u201cdeep issue\u201d\u2014not just a superficial one that everyone is already familiar with. For example, diabetes is an issue. The global environment is also an issue. Everyone knows about these. But rather than stopping at that level of understanding, you must dig deeper and deeper, starting from a personal curiosity\u2014asking, \u201cWhat does this really mean?\u201d\u2014until you reach a specific point where you realize, \u201cSo this is where the issue lies!\u201d That is what a \u201cdeep issue\u201d is.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

If we can identify the core issue, we can combine technologies to solve it. For example, to solve diabetes using tofu, we can\u2019t rely on tofu as it is today; we need to create a collection of technologies by incorporating specific functionalities\u2014such as this one or that one. This collection of technologies is, in essence, \u201cnew knowledge.\u201d In other words, the knowledge manufacturing industry is about combining existing knowledge to create new knowledge in order to solve unresolved challenges.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Another important point is that solving problems requires \u201csomething tangible.\u201d Today\u2019s event is an interdisciplinary conference bringing together many researchers. What researchers do is make \u201cdiscoveries.\u201d However, discoveries alone do not qualify for patents. To obtain a patent, a discovery must be transformed into a reproducible \u201cinvention.\u201d Once a discovery is turned into an invention and patented, it becomes what is known as \u201cintellectual property.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

So, does having intellectual property change the world? Unfortunately, it does not. This is a major challenge, but Japan is overflowing with \u201cunused patents.\u201d There are discoveries, there are inventions, and there is intellectual property. However, since these assets aren\u2019t being utilized, innovation doesn\u2019t happen. This is because innovation arises as a result of solving problems. And to solve problems, we must combine knowledge and give it \u201cform.\u201d In other words, to drive innovation, the manufacturing sector is absolutely essential in the final phase. First and foremost, I hope that both researchers and manufacturers will fully understand this point.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Compared to its peak, more than 98% of Japan\u2019s textile production capacity has been lost to overseas markets. In short, the number of companies operating in the textile industry in Japan has fallen to less than 2% of what it was at its peak. Given these challenging circumstances, how have we been able to continue our business? What are our strengths, and how can we make them even stronger? That is what I would like to discuss today.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Mr. Koji Hase, President and CEO, Hase-Tora Spinning Co., Ltd. Born on January 11, 1980, in Gifu Prefecture. After graduating from Reitaku Mizunami Junior and Senior High School, he attended Reitaku University, from which he graduated in March 2003. In April 2003, he joined Hasetora Spinning Co., Ltd. After serving as president of the Osaka branch and a subsidiary in China, he was appointed President and Representative Director of the Hasetora Group in December 2019, becoming the fifth-generation leader.<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n

lengthening a valley<\/strong>\u3000Hase Tora Spinning was founded in 1887 (Meiji 20). For the past 136 years, we have been engaged in the textile industry. However, our founder was not originally an expert in textiles, nor had he ever worked for a textile company. So why did he start a spinning company? It was to solve a social problem.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It is said that 136 years ago, Hashima City was a poor region with no industry to speak of. Many people worked in agriculture while also engaging in sericulture, barely making ends meet by selling their cocoons. However, these cocoons were bought up at rock-bottom prices by middlemen from the cities. As a result, children other than the eldest son\u2014who was expected to take over the family farm\u2014had to leave the area to find work elsewhere in their mid-teens. Consequently, the region never managed to become prosperous. Determined to break this vicious cycle, the founder decided to establish a silk-spinning company that would operate locally.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

We purchase the cocoons that local people have raised with all their heart and soul at a fair price, while also providing them with jobs at our factory. If we can process these cocoons into raw silk locally, we add value to the product, which in turn enriches the entire region. Hase Tora Spinning was founded to make this vision a reality. I believe it is precisely because we have continually sought ways to contribute to society through our business that we have been able to build a history spanning 136 years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

lengthening a valley<\/strong>\u3000You're absolutely right. In this competitive society, manufacturing bases have been steadily moving to areas with lower labor costs. However, it's also true that the coming era holds tremendous opportunities.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Currently, global consumption of textile materials totals more than 90 million metric tons annually. Moreover, this consumption has doubled over the past 20 years. This is because clothing consumption has increased in proportion to population growth. As the world\u2019s population continues to grow, this figure will continue to rise.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

So, what would happen if Hase Tora Spinning were able to produce \u201cenvironmentally friendly materials\u201d in such an era? An opportunity will surely arise for our manufacturing to take flight on the global stage. In fact, Hase Tora Spinning has set a goal to \u201cswitch at least 80% of our products to eco-friendly materials by 2030.\u201d We are truly committed to changing the world through textiles.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

As part of our efforts to achieve our goals, we have been collaborating since 2014 with Spiber, a company that manufactures the synthetic protein material Brewed Protein\u2122. In addition, various new fibers are being developed right here in Japan. By combining these fibers with our manufacturing expertise, we hope to contribute to society in new and innovative ways. That is our goal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

To put it simply, textiles are the products that are closest to people. They are in contact with our skin virtually 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their value is truly immense, and the potential for new initiatives in this area is immeasurable.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Furthermore, while it might seem like a negative to say, \u201cOnly 2% remains of Japan\u2019s textile facilities from their heyday,\u201d for the 2% that still exist today, it also means they can proudly declare, \u201cWe\u2019re the only ones in Japan who can do this!\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Imanishi<\/strong>\u3000First, let me tell you about three key features of our company.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

First, it is the first company in Japan to have launched a franchise business. Broadly speaking, it operates a total of 15 businesses across two main areas: a door-to-door sales group focused on cleaning and hygiene products, and a food group. The food group includes Mister Donut, which I\u2019m sure you\u2019re all familiar with. The company is also expanding overseas, primarily in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This year marks our 60th anniversary, and our very first product\u2014the \u201cHome DUSKIN,\u201d a chemical cleaning cloth that removes dust without the need for water\u2014was launched at the time of our founding. I\u2019ll go into more detail later, but Hase Tora Spinning Co., Ltd. developed this Home DUSKIN for us.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Our second characteristic is that all of our businesses are face-to-face service industries. In our core cleaning service business\u2014which centers on the rental of mops and mats\u2014we work with 1,800 franchisees nationwide to deliver products to approximately 5.2 million households across Japan. Although Duskin is often perceived as a large corporation, we actually view ourselves as a collective of small and medium-sized enterprises.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The third characteristic is that the concept of \u201cmanagement through prayer\u201d is at the core of the company\u2019s operations. This is also the philosophy that Seiichi Suzuki, the founder of Duskin, pursued throughout his life. Having endured a difficult childhood marked by extreme poverty, Suzuki rose to prominence at a certain company and eventually married the daughter of its owner. However, this success drew the envy of those around him, which ultimately took a toll on his health and led to him contracting tuberculosis. It was during his hospitalization that he encountered *A Life of Repentance*, a book by Tenka Nishida that was a bestseller at the time. Deeply moved by its ideas, Suzuki subsequently joined Itt\u014den, the community founded by Nishida, and after undergoing spiritual training, arrived at the concept of \u201cManagement Through Prayer.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Duskin continues to cherish and uphold this philosophy as its management principle to this day, and both our employees and franchisees must, just like Suzuki, undergo spiritual training\u2014such as begging for alms\u2014at Itt\u014den before they can become full members of the company.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Masahiro Imanishi, Strategy Department, Strategy Division, Door-to-Door Sales Group, Duskin Co., Ltd.<\/strong>\u3000Born in 1961. A native of Nara Prefecture. Joined Duskin Co., Ltd. in 1983 and was assigned to the Engineering Department of the Production Division. In 1989, he moved to the Product Development Department of the \u201cAi no Mise\u201d Business Division (now the Door-to-Door Sales Group), the company\u2019s core business; in 2012, to the Corporate Planning Department; in 2013, to the President\u2019s Office (now the Secretariat); in 2016, to the Development Research Institute within the Strategy Division; and since 2023, he has been working in the Strategy Department of the same division to match development needs with research opportunities.<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Imanishi<\/strong>\u3000The specific details of that management philosophy are outlined in the image below. One of the points mentioned there is, \u201cWhen faced with a choice between gain and loss, choose the path of loss.\u201d I believe this aligns perfectly with the idea expressed in *The Knowledge Manufacturing Industry*: \u201cSolve problems first; revenue will follow.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Imanishi<\/strong>\u3000We have been deeply indebted to Hase Tora Spinning Co., Ltd. ever since our company was founded. They formed a strong partnership with us in the development of \u201cHome Duskin,\u201d a household chemical cleaning cloth that became a hit in 1964. Since then, they have continued to provide us with materials incorporating new technologies for a wide variety of product developments, including our current flagship product, the red mop.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

suffix for names of swords, armour, musical instruments, etc.<\/strong>\u3000I see. So, in a sense, it was as if Haseko Spinning\u2014a more established company\u2014supported Duskin, which was a startup 60 years ago. How did the two companies first come into contact?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

lengthening a valley<\/strong>\u3000It all began when my grandfather\u2014who was the company president at the time\u2014happened to pass by and saw Seiichi Suzuki, the founder of Duskin, bowing his head in prayer before our silkworm memorial. Noticing a stranger, my grandfather spoke to him, and Mr. Suzuki replied, \u201cActually, I came here to request the development of a new type of thread, but my request was turned down. Still, I\u2019m grateful just to have been able to come here. So, I was paying my respects before returning to Osaka.\u201d This was in 1963, so there was no Shinkansen yet. In other words, he had taken a conventional train from Osaka to Gifu\u2014a journey that took several hours\u2014and was expressing his gratitude even though his request had been turned down. My grandfather, thinking, \u201cWhat an unusual man,\u201d asked, \u201cWhat is this thread for?\u201d Mr. Suzuki reportedly replied, \u201cI want to start a cleaning cloth rental business for the happiness of the world. I\u2019m looking for the right thread to make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Everyone, please think about this for a moment. Sixty years ago, if someone had pitched a business idea involving renting out cleaning rags, most people wouldn\u2019t have agreed to help. In fact, our company\u2019s representative initially turned him down, saying, \u201cThat\u2019s not something we can do.\u201d However, my grandfather was deeply moved by Mr. Suzuki\u2019s passion. So he called that representative and an executive back in, and the four of them\u2014including Mr. Suzuki\u2014 \u201cYou were right to turn it down. I don\u2019t know if this business will succeed either. But after hearing Mr. Suzuki\u2019s passion, I really want to help,\u201d he said, persuading them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Imanishi<\/strong>\u3000The background to this is that Suzuki had originally worked in the waxing business, so he had the know-how to bring out a shine. At the same time, he came across a dust control technology\u2014originally developed in the United States\u2014that removes dust without using water, and he was reportedly so impressed that he exclaimed, \u201cWhat a wonderful product\u2014a \u2018chemical cloth\u2019 that gets itself dirty to make others clean!\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

lengthening a valley<\/strong>\u3000What really moved me was the story of how the cleaning cloth led to women\u2019s entry into the workforce. Back in the 1960s, even in winter, people would wring out cleaning cloths with cold water, and their hands would quickly become chapped. It seems Ms. Suzuki had a vision: \u201cI want to make cleaning and other household chores easier with a cleaning cloth that doesn\u2019t require water.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

That\u2019s exactly why my grandfather trusted Mr. Suzuki after just a brief encounter, and why he personally bowed his head to the employee who had initially turned down the offer, asking him to rejoin the project. In a sense, I feel that Duskin\u2019s innovation began with that moment of trust.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Ono<\/strong>\u3000Our base in Okayama, like Gifu\u2014home to Hase Tora Spinning\u2014is a textile town. However, as times changed, the precision metalworking technology used to manufacture spinning nozzles\u2014which are essential for the production of synthetic fibers\u2014was gradually losing its purpose. The starting point for our business was the idea of finding a way to apply that technology to chemical processes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Technically, the core of this technology is wet spinning using microchannels. To explain this in a bit more detail, the process involves creating two flows\u2014an inner and an outer flow\u2014within a small nozzle; the outer flow squeezes the inner fluid, and as it is drawn out, it solidifies to form a fiber. While wet spinning is a long-established technology, our company\u2019s strength lies in the use of microchannels, which, combined with the action of the outer flow, enables us to produce extremely fine fibers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Most synthetic fibers are produced using a process called dry spinning, in which petroleum-derived materials are melted at high temperatures, drawn into filaments, and then solidified. Since this process is well-suited for mass production, it is the method used by almost all major companies, and as a result, there are now very few companies that still use wet spinning.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

However, most of the natural, sustainable fiber materials that will be absolutely essential in the years to come are sensitive to heat. In other words, they are not suitable for dry spinning. What is needed now is wet spinning technology, which involves solidifying the fiber within a flowing solution to form the fiber. Therefore, we aim to significantly advance our wet spinning capabilities and tap into new markets while fully leveraging Japan\u2019s advanced technology.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

To achieve this, we face two major challenges. The first is a lack of advanced processing technologies for manufacturing. The second is that the apparel industry\u2014the primary application for these fibers\u2014does not currently require fibers of this level of fineness. In other words, we must identify new applications for these ultra-fine fibers moving forward. We are currently seeking partners to help us build this business together. However, the current reality is that it seems unlikely there would be enough demand to justify producing such large quantities. For example, if masks were made from ultra-fine fibers, air resistance would be significantly reduced, so it should be possible to create high-performance masks that address the issue of breathability. Ultimately, though, I think they\u2019ll lose out to cheaper materials like ordinary nonwoven fabric because people will conclude, \u201cWe don\u2019t need that level of performance.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n
